On March 25, the Spanish Consulate General in Chengdu held the opening ceremony in the city. It is the third consular office of Spain in Chinese mainland, covering Sichuan, Guizhou and Yunnan Provinces, and Chongqing Municipality. Up to now, 21 foreign consulates have been approved to be set up in Sichuan.

Li Yunze, member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Sichuan Provincial Committee and Vice Governor of Sichuan Province, said that Spain is an important partner of Sichuan in Europe. In recent years, the two sides have conducted fruitful cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, investment and people-to-people exchanges. MAPFRE, Zara and other 39 well-known Spanish enterprises and institutions have settled in Sichuan, and the China-Spain rural complex project with the new model of “agriculture + cultural innovation + new countryside” is under negotiation and promotion. In 2021, the total import and export volume between Sichuan and Spain increased by 98.4% year on year. Four universities in Sichuan, including Sichuan University and Southwest University of Science and Technology, offer courses in the major of Spanish, and have carried out long-term inter-school cooperation with Spanish universities. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, Sichuan and Spain have joined hands in curbing the virus by donating medical supplies to each other and sharing experience, renewing the sincere friendship as the sun always shines again after a storm. It is hoped that the two sides will take the opening of the Spanish Consulate General in Chengdu as a new starting point to deepen people-to-people exchanges, reinforce pragmatic cooperation in culture, education, tourism, sports and youth, and jointly carry forward China-Spain friendship. Sichuan will support enterprises to innovate cooperation models, expand economic and trade exchanges, strengthen cooperation in advanced manufacturing, electronic information and green economy, and create new growth points for bilateral cooperation.

The Spanish Ambassador to China Rafael Dezcallar de Mazarredo said that thanks to the sound political relations between China and Spain, as well as the close ties between the two countries in business, finance, tourism, education and culture, the Spanish Consulate General in Chengdu was established, which marks a higher level of China-Spain relations. 2023 will mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Spain. He added that Spain is planning the Year of Culture and Tourism with China, including important art exhibitions and cultural activities.
